RICS Professionalism Module: How to Prepare and Pass the RICS Online Assessment

Passing the RICS Professionalism Module is a mandatory requirement for all APC candidates before sitting the final assessment. The module ensures that you understand and commit to upholding the RICS Rules of Conduct and core professional values—essential for earning the trust of clients, colleagues, and the public.

📘 What Is the RICS Professionalism Module?

The Professionalism Module is an online learning course and assessment developed by RICS. It consists of interactive content followed by a multiple-choice quiz to test your knowledge of ethical standards and decision-making within the surveying profession.
The module is free for APC candidates and can be accessed through the RICS online academy.

The module includes four e-learning modules and a test that all candidates must pass not longer than 12 months before submitting for final assessment to be eligible to submit for Assessment. In the e-learning modules, you will learn about the five Rules of Conduct, which support positive change in the built and natural environments by promoting and enforcing the highest ethical standards in valuation, the development and management of land, real estate, construction, and infrastructure.

📝 Assessment Format

As a candidate, you must also pass the Ethics Test, a 20-question multiple-choice test that tests your understanding of what you are learning. Your understanding of professionalism, ethics, and practice will also be tested during the Final Assessment Interview.

20 multiple-choice questions
Pass mark: 70% (i.e., 14 correct answers)
Time limit: 30 minutes
Open book: You may refer to notes and guidance materials
Unlimited attempts, but only a pass certificate is valid for your submission

📚 What to Study Before Taking the Module

To prepare effectively, make sure you read and understand:
The RICS Rules of Conduct
RICS guidance on conflicts of interest, professional behavior, and duty to clients and the public
Use real-world examples to understand how ethical principles apply in practice.

🎯 Top Tips to Pass the RICS Professionalism Module

Don’t rush – Take your time to read each scenario carefully.
Use official resources – RICS provides practice materials and sample questions.
Think like a chartered surveyor – Choose the most professionally responsible answer, even if it’s not the easiest.
Review incorrect answers – Learn from your mistakes if you don’t pass on the first attempt.
Download your certificate – You must upload this as part of your APC submission.

⚠️ Common Pitfalls to Avoid

Assuming it’s “just a formality” – The ethics assessment is taken seriously by assessors.
Not linking ethical thinking to real situations – Use STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) examples to build understanding.

🏁 Final Thoughts
