What is RICS APC?
The RICS APC (Assessment of Professional Competence) is the final step in becoming a Chartered Surveyor and gaining MRICS status. The process is designed to assess a candidate’s knowledge, experience, and professional judgment within their chosen surveying pathway. It typically begins with enrolling on the APC route that aligns with your education and experience—such as the Structured Training, Preliminary Review, or Senior Professional route. Over a period of structured training (usually 24 months), candidates document their experience against specific competencies required by RICS, including mandatory, technical, and optional competencies. Key submissions include a Summary of Experience, Case Study, CPD log, and Professionalism Module. Once submitted and accepted, candidates attend a Final Assessment Interview, where a panel of assessors evaluates their understanding, application, and ability to provide professional advice. Successfully passing the APC signifies that the candidate meets RICS’s high standards of competence, ethics, and professionalism, granting them the MRICS designation.
